First flight, reaching the operations area: Nairobi to Kindu Part 2 - Mwanza HTMW, Tanzania, to Goma FZNA, Congo DRC The second leg of the trip is taking us from Mwanza to Goma, on a straight course. First crossing lake Victoria (man, this pond is BIG!), passing over West alke and close to Kigali. Then climbing over the mountains and flying through valleys (didn't want to get over the 10.000 ft) to reach lake Kivu and finally dropping down to the lake for approach and landing at Goma, on the northern shore. Great weather, same as on the first leg, clear and warm -still 27º c at 9000 ft- smooth, easy flying and no trouble at all with the engine... <click on the snapshots to enlarge> climbing out of HTMW <- -> near Kigali mountains <- -> valley flying at 8000 ft down to lake Kivu <- -> landed at Goma [] see flight log flightno. 946 Kindu, Congo DRC, 15.5.2004 Part 3 - Goma FZNA to Kindu FZOA, Congo DRC The third and last leg of the trip was a more less direct course from Goma to Kindu. First crossing lake Kivu diagonally from the NE to SW and then flying the line from Bukavu Kavumu, on the southwestern shore of the lake, climbing over the ridges there and then down again and on to Shabunda and Kindu. I ended picking up the Lualaba river just South of Kindu and flying up (northbound) along the river until reaching the airfield. Nice weather again this morning; we left Goma just after 08.00 and reached Kindu by 09.45. Odd, odd, odd! That RH engine lost power again and got us flying on to Kindu with the assymetric throttle setting as before. <click on the snapshots to enlarge> turning for TO at Goma <- -> clearing the mountain ridges congolese landscape <- -> Kindu e.t.a. 15 min. on final for Kindu <- -> engine settings [] see flight log flightno. 947 < back to Part 1 < back to BYRD index |
