Operation "Snow cap"

Mission 02

Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 15:05:33 -0700
Subject: AN225 - MISSION 2
X-Priority: 3

While we are waiting in Zurich this week for the weather to improve, I have
scheduled us some time doing glacier takeoff and landing training as well as
LAPES drop practice. See the dESPair event schedule for details.

I'm sorry to ruin everyones fun here in the big city but we may find this
practice useful later on. I am hoping that Sir Skybuster will make the
C-119 available to everyone on the glacier to practice LAPES drops. I have
rented two hummers that can help towing the dummy load back into the C-119
after the practice drops. I have some tents (thanks to Vilk and Uli for
these supplies) packed into the Q400 that we'll be setting up on the glacier
early tomorrow morning. These will be heated and have food and other
supplies though at the end of the day we'll head back here to Zurich. I am
hoping that everyone when not flying will help out with cargo loading and
other tasks.

One last note, the download package contains a few more files including a
clear gravel runway bitmap so that my custom terrain texture for the glacier
strip can be seen. I've included a copy of the original gravel bitmap in
the distribution as well that you can use when this operation is over. The
details are on the mission 2 web page.

See you all on the glacier.

BRIEFING:

ID: RCV01-M02
AN-225 Search Operation - Glacier Landing and LAPES Training
CONTACT: dESPair Mission HQ
RECIP: All Active dESPair Personnel

FROM: Zürich Kloten (LSZH)
VIA: direct
TO: Glacier Practice Field (GPF)
LSZH DEPRT: 31 Oct 2000 09:30 (local Denmark time) - 02 Nov 2000 09:30
LSZH ARR: At latest: 02 Nov 2000 17:00

BRIEFING:

All active dESPair crew should be taking part in glacier landing training and practice LAPES drops.

Latest weather reports show stable conditions. The weather conditions are as follows:

Ceiling 10,000 feet ASL overcast, wind 5 kts at 70 degrees increasing to 10 kts above 10,000 feet. Visibility is 4 Nm, the temperature is +10 C and the runway conditions are wet.

Flight Instructions:

1. This practice operation will take place from Oct. 31 until Nov. 2.

2. File VFR direct to GPF. The field may be hard to spot but there is a beacon in place that should be obvious. The plowed runway is at 140 / 320 degrees.

3. Check the runway conditions visually before attempting any landings as the field is uncontrolled.

4. Practice a series of landings and takeoffs, both touch-and-gos, and stop and gos. Practice shortfield takeoffs and landings.

5. One of the C-119 pilots will make their C-119 aircraft available after you become familiar with takeoffs and landings. Practice a few LAPES drops trying to keep your altitude at less than 10 feet AGL. A dummy load will be used for practice. Please drop the load to the side of the runway and land immediately after the practice drop so that the dummy load may be loaded back onto the aircraft. Two hummers will be on site to help tow the load back to the plane. Pilots are expected to volunteer with loading while not flying.

6. Supplies in terms of food and maintenance equipment will be brought to the site and heated tents will be set up on the north end of the field that you may use. We will be returning to Zurich at the end of each day of practice.

Flight Plan:

GPF is located 29 Nm south of LSZH on the 147 degree radial from the airport. The glacier is just above the origin of a mountain river which feed into the lake at the base of the mountain.

MISSION GOALS:
  • Glacier Landing and Takeoff Certificate

  • LAPES training

These may be deleted at the end of all of the missions in this operation if you do not wish to keep them.

As well a clear gravel bitmap and a copy of the original will be installed into your "X-system Resources/textures/grav" folder. Replace the bitmap with the copy at the end of this operation.

FROM dESPair HQ:

Thanks for the planning. In fact, I advise ANYBODY who plans to fly
in the upcoming missions to practise both, LAPES and glacier landings.

dESPair HQ has joined with a local certified glacier pilot, and those
who'd like to receive the official glacier landing certificate are
advised to contact HQ asap.

You will get a detailed flight plan for three glacier landing places.
You have to fly those routes and record the flight data. After the
flights, you send the data to the HQ where it is analysed.

If your numbers show that you have learned how to handle the mountain
landings and take offs, you will get a certificate, and you will be
one of our front men in the glacier missions.

For those who don't go for the certificate, be reminded: dESPair
HQ is keeping a detailed log of the training lessons our crew
performs. This is not a threat. But we greatly care about the
security, and our reputation can not afford pilot and aircraft
losses due to poor training, knowledge and experience on the
behalve of the crew.

The recorvery of the Antonov will NOT be a simple game. You
should familarize with the various peculiarities that mountain
flying requires.

You are not required to fly the certificate trips, but we highly
recommend you take the time and fly the training missions planned
by Capt. Sir Darkwing.

You have time to at least next weekend.

Thanks for listening.
Clear sky!
