The weather conditions are improving slightly making flight into central Switzerland possible. Due to the number of large aircraft in this operation and limited ramp space, the group will be splitting into two and going to two different airports from which the AN-225 search operation will commence. The group is split as follows:
Destination: Meiringen (LSMM) - Mission # 3A:
Sir Walrus
Sir Habakuk
Sir Snidley
Destination: Locarno (LSZL) - Mission # 3B:
Sir Vilk
Sir Darkwing
Sir Snowman Brick
Sir Mike Skybuster
These are the pilots that I currently know of who are in Zurich. If anyone else can make it down, we'd be glad to have you. Just pick the destination airport of your choice and announce your intentions to dESPair HQ.
Flight Instructions:
Mission 3A Zurich (LSZH) - Meiringen (LSMM)
See the Mission 3A flight plan map below and weather information. The red line on the map is the direct route to LSMM. The blue line shows the route via the glacier practice strip if you need to do more practicing or if you need to pick up supplies. The instructions below are for the "red" route.
- File VFR to LSMM as icing is reported in clouds.
- Depart runway 10 from LSZH and turn to heading 195
18 Nm: You will pass over the tip of a lake.
26 Nm: You will arrive over another large lake. Keep to the right side of the lake and follow the river at an approximate heading of 210 degrees.
45 Nm: Follow the river to its end where it flows into a small lake. Climb over the hill at the end of this lake. LSMM is directly over the other side. After clearing the hill, perform the circling approach into LSMM by turning right to a heading of 255 degrees and descend to 3500 feet. Do a U-turn back towards LSMM and land on runway 10.
Mission 3A Zurich (LSZH) - Locarno (LSZL)
See the Mission 3B flight plan map below and weather information. The red line on the map is the direct route to LSZL. The blue line shows the route via the glacier practice strip if you need to do more practicing or if you need to pick up supplies. The instructions below are for the "red" route.
- File VFR to LSZL as icing is being reported in clouds.
- Depart runway 10 from LSZH and turn to heading 170
10 Nm: Pass over large lake. Head for middle of valley directly in front of you.
18 Nm: You will pass over a small lake in the valley. Turn right to a heading of approximately 185 degrees to keep in the valley.
24 Nm: You will pass over another small lake.
28 Nm: You will pass over a large lake. Keep to the left side and follow the lake to the end and follow the river that exits the lake. At this point you will be entering mountainous terrain.
41 Nm: A branch of the river goes left. Keep right to follow the river south and climb to at least 8500 feet.
48 Nm: The river make a sharp 90 degree turn to the right. Don't follow the river anymore and instead turn left to a heading of 165 degrees over the mountain.
55 Nm: You will pass to the left of the town of Ambri
69 Nm: You should come to two valleys headed your direction both with rivers. Follow the valley on the right and descend to 2500 for the approach into Locarno.
76 Nm: Turn left when you arrive at the large lake for the visual approach into Locarno.
